Following the triumph of Journey to the Edge of Hell, Michael Cimino was given carte blanche to direct Heaven's Gate, an ambitious fresco combining adventure, drama and Westerns. The film is loosely based on the Johnson County War of the 1890s, which pitted wealthy cattle ranchers against European immigrants attempting to settle in Wyoming.
Against this brutal backdrop, we follow Kris Kristofferson as a federal sheriff faced with a moral dilemma: protect the settlers or remain loyal to the elites he rubbed shoulders with at Harvard. At his side, Christopher Walken plays a mercenary in the ranchers' pay, while Isabelle Huppert plays Ella, a prostitute caught in the crossfire.
La Porte du paradis will be broadcast on Prime Video from March 1, 2025.
Synopsis: Two Harvard alumni reunite in Wyoming in 1890. Averill is a federal sheriff, while Billy Irvine, consumed by alcohol, is a member of a ranchers' association fighting small-scale immigrants, most of them from Central Europe. Averill opposes the association's intervention in the district and tries to convince his friend Ella, a prostitute of French origin, to leave the country.
While fans of classic westerns may be put off, Heaven's Gate could appeal to those who appreciate ambitious frescoes and tales of the great conflicts of American history. With its meticulous set design, meticulous direction and quasi-documentary approach, the film is reminiscent of works such as Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America and Terrence Malick's Harvest of the Sky.
However, its imposing running time(3h39) and contemplative pace may not suit viewers looking for a traditional action Western. Far from duels and saloon brawls, the film focuses on political and social issues, in a tragic, disenchanted atmosphere.
When released in the U.S. in 1980, Heaven's Gate was a commercial and critical disaster, bankrupting United Artists. It would be years before it was rehabilitated, thanks in no small part to restored versions that allowed us to rediscover the richness of its aesthetics and the strength of its message. Today, it is considered one of the most ambitious westerns in the history of cinema.
With its prestigious cast, true-life story and masterful direction, Heaven's Gate is a western in a class of its own, earning cult status despite its initial failure. For lovers of auteur cinema and ambitious historical frescoes.
