In 1882, Albert is a timid sheep farmer whose cowardice in a gunfight gives his fiancée a perfect reason to walk away. The arrival of a beautiful, enigmatic woman, a crack shot, presses him to find real courage. But when her husband — a feared outlaw — uncovers their alliance, Albert must conquer his fears to stand up to the bandit.
The film marks several firsts for Seth MacFarlane: his first live-action feature without an animated character, his first major on-screen lead, and his first project in which he wears the hats of director, writer, producer and star. Inspired by Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles (1974), MacFarlane crafts a deliberately anachronistic character—a “Far West nerd” who stands out in a landscape of violence and saloon brawls. Filming took place in New Mexico, notably at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a movie town rebuilt for the occasion.
Charlize Theron, who at the time was looking to move away from her dramatic roles, chose this project for its offbeat tone. She wore a wig throughout filming, having shaved her head for Mad Max: Fury Road. The movie also features a cameo by Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown from Back to the Future, tinkering on his DeLorean.
