They were the star of playgrounds in the 1990s, and have been developed on GameBoy, Nintendo DS and, more recently, smartphones: Tamagotchi have left their mark on generations of children. The little Japanese creatures are finally back on our consoles, with Tamagotchi Plaza, a game developed by Bandai Namco for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 unveiled at the Nintendo Direct. The game was released on June 27, 2025.

In this game, you take on the role of a little creature, tasked with developing the town's shops by making customers happy. The aim is to meet the expectations of each visitor . Restaurant, fashion boutique, concert hall, doctor's office: you jump from one business to another to enjoy a variety of missions and games.
Tamagotchi Plaza features 12 shops, including a dental practice, an eyewear store, an artist's studio and a tea room. As you work in each store, you can gradually improve and upgrade them. The whole town has to be dressed up to welcome the eagerly-awaited festival.
On Nintendo Switch 2, three additional stores are offered to players, bringing the total number of mini-games and stores to 15. These three stores use gameplay designed for 2.0 console controls. In these stores, you can make sushi, throw shuriken... And you can link the two activities in the double sushi-shuriken store.
This new title offers a brand-new option: the possibility of playing with two players in offline mode. These duo games offer new challenges, in cooperation, or in VS confrontation!

20 years after the Nintendo DS game, we're back in the world of Tamagotchi, playing shopkeeper and developing the town.
This new opus features a dozen stores, all different from the previous game. Creperie, night pool, glasses store, dentist, tea room... The stores are original and fun, each with its own identity. Some tasks are simple and intuitive. Others would have deserved a little tutorial at the start of the game: you don't always know what to do, or where to find the right items when the first customers arrive.
A word of warning: some shops offer duo games, but you'll need an extra Switch controller, which you don't have on Switch Lite.
On Switch, the world changes a little: you find yourself in a town square, in a park surrounded by shops. So you can wander more or less freely between the stores, completing little quests along the way and chatting with the locals. A more pleasant immersion than in the DS game, where you moved from one store to another via a fixed screen.
On the whole, Tamagotchi Plaza doesn't bring much new to the franchise. Missions are repetitive, with players climbing shop levels one by one, repeating the same tasks over and over again. This aspect of the game may be tiring for many players. On the other hand, if you loved the previous games, this one should please you just as much.
Tamagotchi Plaza is a quiet, no-holds-barred simulation game, accessible to young and old alike. A pleasant experience, not revolutionary, but very comfortable.
After a long wait, fans of the license are finally back in the cute, original world of Tamagotchi.
