Nintendo relaunches Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Switch and Switch 2. Announced at the Nintendo Direct on September 12, 2025 and released on October 2, these two cult Wii games return in a remastered version to celebrate 40 years of Mario. Players can now rediscover the interstellar adventures of the famous plumber in revisited universes, with graphics and performance optimized for today's consoles.
These 3D episodes marked their era with innovative gameplay, based on the exploration of miniature planets, each with its own gravity. The control system, which initially used the Wiimote and Nunchuk, has been adapted for the Joy-Con and Pro Controller. The publisher has yet to specify the extent of the improvements, but already promises improved fluidity and a modernized experience on its future console.
In these two adventures, Mario once again sets out to rescue Princess Peach, kidnapped by Bowser. But this time, the action takes place in space: galaxies, stars and planets become the moustachioed plumber's playgrounds. Alongside Harmonie and the Lumas, Mario travels from world to world, collecting stars to power the Comet Observatory and confronting his arch-enemy. Each planet has its own gravity and gameplay mechanics, offering a variety of experiences rarely seen before in the license.
These remasters are aimed above all at Wii era nostalgics, eager to rediscover two of the series' best 3D episodes under current conditions. They will also appeal to new players who haven't had the chance to play Super Mario Galaxy 2, previously unreleased on Nintendo's latest console.
On the other hand, gamers who already own Super Mario 3D All-Stars, including the first Galaxy, may find the price high for content that's partially already available. The prices of €40 each and €70 for the bundle may also put off those hoping for a more attractive offer.
Nintendo accompanies this release with newamiibo (Mario and Luma, Harmonie and Luma) and a replica of Harmonie's storybook, enriched with new lore-related pages. This choice suggests that the publisher is preparing the ground for the Super Mario Galaxy movie, expected on April 3, 2026. This synergy between video games and cinema reflects Nintendo' s desire to further expand its mascot's universe.
These re-releases are part of a wider program to celebrate Mario's birthday, including announcements of new games such as Mario Tennis Fever, a special edition of Super Mario Wonder for Switch 2, and an exclusive exhibition at the Nintendo Museum. With Galaxy and Galaxy 2 brought up to date, Big N is offering gamers an unmissable space voyage and re-launching a mythical part of its catalog. Let's give in to temptation?
