The Official Trailer for The Sims 4: Heritage and Royalty:

Overview of The Sims 4: Legacy and Royalty Expansion

« Experience historic moments by dueling with swords or kissing frogs as you climb the ranks of nobility. Whether you're a noble or not, you have the chance to establish a dynasty. Reap the benefits of your prestige while keeping the realm united, or succumb to conflicts and scandals. Wield power—but beware, you might just lose it all, along with your grace. »

This trailer hints at many intriguing elements and fuels a blend of hopes and questions about this upcoming expansion, which appears to be a major release. It features familiar fairytale motifs from our childhood—such as a magic mirror and a kiss transforming a frog—yet also incorporates more contemporary references: notably, the Bridgerton Chronicle, when we see noble characters hiding their secrets...

In a detailed reveal video, the development team unveiled the key features of this brand-new pack. The world of Ondarion is home to the debut kingdom in The Sims 4.

Ondarion comprises three distinct neighborhoods, each boasting its own unique identity, architecture, history, and noble lineage. Two of these districts draw inspiration from Northern Italy and the Mediterranean Basin, while the third pays homage to West Africa. Spanning over 15 lots, Ondarion stands out as one of the largest worlds in The Sims 4.

In this world, you'll find apartments and houses alongside communal lots, including a new type of terrain that offers versatile use. During the day, the space can serve as a library, a museum, or a gym... But at night, it transforms into a lively nightclub.

The Heritage & Royalty pack introduces nobility and royal families into The Sims 4. Being noble is a full-time career—an playable career that allows your Sims to climb the social ladder and maybe even become the king or queen of the world. All Sims 4 worlds can turn into monarchies; only one Sim can reign at a time, managing just one world at a time. Multiple nobles can coexist in the same world, leaving it up to you to decide who will wear the crown...

The "Noble" career path features a total of 10 levels. As your Sim progresses, they unlock new titles such as courtier, chamberlain, aristocrat, and more. Unlike other careers, this one is a bit different — there are no set working hours. Being a Noble is more like a lifestyle that requires constant attention to certain duties. Your Sim will have daily tasks and responsibilities, like speaking with the people, handling problems, setting new taxes, or organizing a ball. Their behavior throughout the day can impact their image and reputation as a noble. It’s a somewhat demanding career, but very rewarding for ambitious Sims... Just beware: a rival could dethrone your monarch, so keep an eye on your back...

Noble careers could shape the world: through their decrees, the king or queen might boost birth rates, influence the economy, and sway the very course of history...

Families and Magic

This expansion also introduces dynasties. This system, independent of royalty, allows you to build powerful families with influence and a rich history. Dynasties borrow elements from club and celebrity systems: the founding Sim of your dynasty rules the family. They set family values, can forge alliances with other families or exile troublesome members, confront rivals, and you’ll need to select an heir, avoid scandals, or use insider information to secure your clan’s legacy...

You don't need to be nobility to have a dynasty, and vice versa. This system works seamlessly with all packs. The good deeds of dynasty members earn them prestige: these points can be used to unlock benefits such as getting a promotion, influencing the market, or earning widespread respect...

There’s no cap on how many Sims you can include in a dynasty: the only limit is your imagination. However, all these Sims need to be connected to the head of the family through blood, marriage, or adoption. Plus, the family tree gets a major upgrade with this new pack. It now showcases more detailed relationships and even reveals sometimes questionable connections, adding extra layers of drama to your storytelling...

Although it’s modern, this pack draws heavily from the fairy tales of our childhood. It features a sword stuck in a stone, offering the crown to whoever can pull it out... You can also converse with an enchanted mirror or kiss frogs to break a prince’s curse... But beware: kissing too many frogs in public isn’t well received. Rumors could spread if your Sims get caught in the act.

Yes, in this pack, Sims thrive on scandals! Some Sims have their ears everywhere, uncovering secret information that could damage your reputation, marriage, or career. The scandal system also includes a form of blackmail: you can pay or request money in exchange for a secret. Secrets can be revealed on social media or by asking a Sim to keep theirs. Depending on the DLCs you own, you can unlock a variety of different secrets.

Finally, your Sims can now become swordmasters with the launch of fencing in the game. This new skill is a must-have for Nobles, whether they’re defending their honor, fighting for the throne, impressing a partner, or aiming for a promotion... You can even host tournaments—events with specific goals—to showcase your skills. And don’t worry: there’s no risk of dying in a duel.

The Heritage and Royalty pack is set to introduce exciting new gameplay elements, opening up plenty of fresh storytelling possibilities and challenges. The world is vast and diverse, with furniture and clothing inspired by a variety of different cultures. We’re hopeful that this expansion will live up to its promising and thrilling expectations!

Our review of the pack:

Game tested on PC

The throne calls—can you reach it amid the duels and scandals that can erupt in The Sims 4? Heritage and Royalty is the 21st expansion pack for The Sims 4, and it brings a fresh breeze of novelty to the game.

This pack has nothing in common with the spin-off The Sims Medieval, which let players manage a kingdom through various quests. Here, we stay in the modern world, offering a sandbox experience that leaves players completely free.

The new features introduced by the DLC work well. The Noble career is fun, sparks numerous storytelling opportunities, and creates a convincing illusion of a modern-day kingdom. Tasks are straightforward, progression is relatively quick, and the gameplay is accessible. We might have liked a bit more challenge—perhaps Sims could have challenged your avatar or formed alliances independently—but generally, The Sims 4 doesn’t tend to offer gameplay that directly contradicts the player’s choices.

The scandal system is also well-designed, more detailed and engaging than the secret system from the Get to Work pack. Once again, scandals open up new gameplay possibilities. Now, you need to be cautious about your public actions—one misstep can spark a scandal. The system is fun and easy to pick up, though it lacks a bit of gravity: uncovering a scandal doesn’t significantly impact your Sim or their relationships.

Dynasties are likely to delight players invested in large families. The system is well-suited to complex lore and long stories, fitting naturally with gameplay focused on family. Managing a dynasty is simple, with an intuitive and clear management panel (a relief in a menu increasingly cluttered with numerous packs).

The world of Ondarion is stunning. Each neighborhood has its own identity. The environments are detailed and immersive, making exploration enjoyable. However, they don’t quite mesh together. Each of the three neighborhoods has distinct architecture, but they feel disconnected. It’s unclear why these three separate worlds are combined instead of having one larger, more developed world representing each influence. It feels like a missed opportunity for a more expansive, cohesive environment.

Another recurring disappointment in Sims packs is the perceived emptiness of the world. Beautiful scenery, but lacking vitality. Public spaces such as plazas and markets are populated by a few random Sims, but overall, the world feels somewhat lifeless.

This pack is fun to play, offering fresh perspectives and well-crafted gameplay elements. It may lack depth, but it remains a strong expansion. The dynasty system might make this pack essential for players who enjoy managing large families.

This pack is available for purchase as a unique bundle. Just like with every expansion pack, three exclusive limited-edition items come included with your purchase—available until March 15th. Additionally, this bundle features two mini-kits: one themed "Sunshine Tea" and another inspired by classic Hollywood styles.

Which of your Sims has a desire to become queen or king? Mark your calendars for the throne war this February!
