At San Diego Comic-Con, PlayStation offered fresh details on God of War Laufey, the next chapter in Kratos’ saga from Santa Monica Studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment, this time shining a light on the god’s wife, who, at the outset of the Norse arc, has crossed into the afterlife. And we even have a release date, set for February 2026. Here’s the update!

Kratos hands him the weapons, but the saga’s future is being written here. God of War Laufey, the new action-adventure game from Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, will be released exclusively on PS5 on February 16, 2027. Unveiled during the State of Play on June 2, 2026, and later highlighted at the San Diego Comic-Con, this new chapter centers Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, on a journey into the afterlife of the gods. The release will also be accompanied by a physical disc edition.

Long told through the memories of Kratos, Atreus and the Giants, Laufey now takes center stage as the main character. Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil Born Again...) picks up the role of Faye, previously voiced in God of War Ragnarök, while Jack Quaid (The Boys...) portrays Phranque, an enigmatic cosmic cube that accompanies him on his journey. Perlina Lau lends her voice to Rue, the guardian bound to the heroine’s sword. Christopher Judge remains linked to Kratos as well, though the exact place of the Spartan warrior in the story has not yet been clarified.

On the gameplay side, God of War Laufey keeps the series’ action-adventure backbone, but shifts toward faster, more airborne combat. Faye mainly fights with a magical sword, weaving moves around momentum, combos, and soul-linked magic. She can temporarily siphon the souls of certain enemies to turn their powers against them. The system thus feels more mobile than Kratos’ battles, while preserving a strong emphasis on close quarters and companions.

The game also introduces several figures from outside Norse mythology. Sekhmet, the Egyptian lioness-headed goddess, and Begtse, the protector associated with Tibetan Buddhism, are among the beings encountered in this afterlife where different pantheons clash for power. This choice gradually widens the franchise's playground, which until now had been primarily centered on Greek and Norse mythologies.

Synopsis of God of War Laufey:

Death was supposed to end Faye's journey. Yet the warrior wakes up in Everywhen, the so-called afterlife of the gods, a realm where magic of all kinds circling back. She soon learns that the safeguards put in place to shield Kratos and Atreus are in jeopardy. To protect her family, Laufey must trek through this corrupted realm and face a number of deities drawn from different mythologies.

This story should also revisit Faye's personality, a rebellious leader who stands against the Aesir, guardian of the Jötnar and former protector of Fauvebois. Santa Monica Studio thus aims to develop a character whose actions have already directly influenced the two previous games, even though players never really got to share in her daily life. The adventure can be followed independently, even if PlayStation recommends having played God of War and God of War Ragnarök to better understand its universe and its characters.

God of War Laufey trailer:

Is God of War's Laufey paving the way for Kratos' return?

During the San Diego Comic-Con, Santa Monica Studio underscored that Faye plays a pivotal role in the franchise’s long-term outlook. Cory Barlog, the studio’s creative director, is involved in the project alongside director Ariel Lawrence. PlayStation has not yet officially detailed how this adventure will shape a possible future Kratos installment. The narrative link to his family should remain central, since the mission of Laufey is precisely to safeguard the future of the Spartan and their son.

Meanwhile, a remake of the original Greek trilogy in God of War is well underway, with the announced return of T.C. Carson, the longtime voice of Kratos. The project remains in an early phase and has no release window yet. In the meantime, God of War Laufey is the next major event on the series’ calendar, set for February 16, 2027 on PS5, and should clarify how Faye’s legacy continues to guide Kratos and Atreus long after her passing.
