In place of the Petit Journal Montparnasse, that famous and rather select jazz club, now stands the Jazz Café Montparnasse. Launched last November, the establishment is more open than its predecessor, both in its programming and in its entry fee, which won't cost you a cent.
Just a stone's throw from the capital's tallest tower, the Jazz Café Montparnasse welcomes jazz lovers with free admission. Gypsy jazz, swing on Tuesdays, trio on Wednesdays, all styles of this musical genre are represented, night after night.
For our part, we discovered Jazz Café Montparnasse during an Orient Occident evening. A fabulous blend of origins and cultures set to music by six excellent musicians. Violin, derbuka, canun, double bass, guitar, accordion and vocals transport us sometimes to Greece, sometimes to Morocco.
To accompany this joyous music, Jazz Café Montparnasse offers two dinner formulas, at €32 and €39. We're not going to lie, though the food is good and quite respectable (generous hamburger, melting vegetable gnocchi, foie gras starter, etc.), the prices are a little high for what you get on your plate. Just consider that you're also paying for a quality concert on the menu, and any pecuniary grumbling is out the window! And for those with smaller wallets, there's a drink or a board to share - jazz here is open to all!
We'll definitely be back at Jazz Café Montparnasse!
