Les Amis du Placard: contemporary comedy at Studio Hébertot

From November 11, 2025, to January 14, 2026, Studio Hébertot is staging the comedy Les Amis du Placard, directed by Matthieu Bailly. This contemporary creation brings together four performers and presents a deliberately absurd situation in which consumption becomes a social mechanism taken to the extreme. The show is presented every Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The play features Jacques and Odile, a couple who, thanks to an unexpected promotion at a hypermarket, leave with a product that is unusual to say the least: a pair of "ready-to-use" friends. These new companions, in the flesh, seem to perfectly meet the expectations of a convivial evening. But the balance is quickly upset, revealing the contradictions of a system where friendship and human relationships are reduced to consumer goods.

The text explores contemporary themes such as loneliness, the need for recognition, and the temptation to fill gaps with artificial solutions, using lively and rhythmic writing. The stage design plays on an offbeat realism, creating an atmosphere where the absurd gradually imposes itself as the norm. The characters evolve between naivety, curiosity, and unease, in a setting that highlights the tension between domination and dependence.

Matthieu Bailly's staging favors simplicity of space and efficiency of situations to make room for the behaviors, reactions, and successive shifts that structure the play. The performers strive to bring out the nuances of each character, between conformism, the desire for connection, and contained violence. This approach highlights the contradictions of characters caught up in dynamics they do not fully control.

The cast includes Camille Chainay, Matthieu Bailly, Jules Tarla, and Blandine Guerrand. Their collective performance supports the shifts in tone that run through the show, oscillating between observational comedy and absurd incongruity. The ensemble offers a contemporary interpretation of social relationships and questions how relationships change when utility takes precedence over spontaneity.
