Following his adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Demons in 2022 at the Salle Richelieu, Guy Cassiers returns to Comédie-Française with Bérénice, a Racinian masterpiece. A specialist in theater that questions history and politics, he finds in this tragedy a fertile ground for his exploration of the discourses of power and human dilemmas. Berenice, which revolves around the renunciation by Titus, Emperor of Rome, of his love for the foreign queen, takes on a new dimension under the Flemish director's eye.

Renowned for his mastery of image technologies and their integration into the dramaturgy, Guy Cassiers imagines a moving set: an antechamber suspended in time, where space evolves to the rhythm of the characters' torments. This approach amplifies the psyche of Berenice, portrayed as a strong woman in the face of the hesitations of Titus and Antiochus, her friend who is also in love with her. Cassiers pushes this tension even further by casting a single actor in the roles of Titus and Antiochus, intensifying the turmoil and perception of power.
