Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid, directed by Claude Stratz, will run at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin from May 27 to July 12, 2026.

The final work by Molière, The Imaginary Invalid, is a comedy-ballet premiered on February 10, 1673. The playwright himself stars as Argan, a man obsessed with his health and surrounded by doctors with questionable practices. Just seven days after its debut, Molière collapses during the fourth performance and passes away a few hours later, marking this play as a significant milestone in the history of classical theatre.

Directed by Claude Stratz in 2001, this production quickly became one of the standouts for the Comédie-Française troupe. Performed over 500 times, it offers a streamlined interpretation that captures the essence of the original comedy-ballet, blending theater, music, and dance seamlessly. The show premiered at the Salle Richelieu on February 22, 2001.

The plot hinges on the blurring of truth and deception: pretend patients, fake doctors, false knowledge. Through its satire of medical quackery, the play questions the science of its era and offers a clear-eyed reflection on the fear of death. Blending farce, irony, and darker undertones, it maintains a tone of humor throughout, never straying from the realm of laughter.

Scenography and costumes are designed by Ezio Toffolutti, with lighting by Jean-Philippe Roy. The original music is composed by Marc-Olivier Dupin. Choreography duties are entrusted to Sophie Mayer. The cast features notable names such as Alain Lenglet, Denis Podalydès, Guillaume Gallienne, Julie Sicard, and Coraly Zahonero, supported by a talented ensemble of musicians and vocalists on stage.

Running from May 27 to July 12, 2026, at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin, The Imaginary Invalid is positioned as a revival of a timeless classic. This production is a must-see at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin through mid-July.
