Madame Joconde is an period comedy that humorously reimagines the creation of the most famous painting in the world. Set in Italy in 1503, the play transports us to the moment when Leonardo da Vinci is about to begin painting the portrait of Lisa Joconde, the woman who would become the Mona Lisa.
The plot is rooted in deliberate fiction. In a bid to save his marriage, François Joconde plans to gift his wife a portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Things take a turn when he has to orchestrate the sitting without her noticing, just as a surprise visit from the Pope looms, threatening artists who deviate from religious images.
The writing champions a spirit of comedic theater rooted in irony, wit, and parody. Its influences draw from popular culture icons like Spamalot by Monty Python and Kaamelott by Alexandre Astier. The show embraces creative liberties with historical ambiguities, using them to enrich the storytelling.
The cast features the duo Les Décaféinés, renowned for their social media comedy sketches that have amassed millions of views. Sharing the stage with them is Guillaume Sentou, who took home the Molière Award for Best Newcomer for his role in Edmond. Also part of the lineup is Martin Heuzard, from the musical Les Années 60.
Written by Rémi Deval, who also co-directs alongside Guillaume Zimmermann—also responsible for the choreography—this new version is a refreshed take on the project originally created in 2023 for Canal+. It’s a live performance designed to be accessible, blending situational comedy with historical references.
Featured in the lineup at Parisian theaters, Madame Joconde offers a playful take on the Renaissance, blending comedy with fiction centered around one of the most iconic women in art history. The show can be seen at the Théâtre du Marais every Sunday at 7:30 p.m., starting February 1, 2026.
