Theater: The Astrologer or False Omens at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale

From June 25 to 28, 2026, the Théâtre de la Cité internationale hosts L’Astrologue ou les Faux Présages, a play born from an unusual question: what would Molière have written had he lived after 1673? Presented by Obvious, Sorbonne University, and the troupe of Théâtre Molière Sorbonne, this production brings together 17th-century theatre, scientific research, and artificial intelligence.

From June 25 to 28, 2026, the project Molière Ex Machina takes over the Théâtre de la Cité internationale in Paris with The Astrologer, or False Omens, a play that Molière could have written after The Imaginary Invalid.

Molière Ex Machina is the meeting of two worlds that oppose each other: on one side, the trio of artists Obvious, pioneers of artistic creation with artificial intelligence, and on the other, the Théâtre Molière Sorbonne, a troupe of actors, dancers and musicians reviving the theatrical techniques of the 17th century unveiled through scientific research.

This gathering, initiated by Sorbonne Université, brings together for the first time researchers in classical humanities and artist-researchers in AI, united by a single aim: to foster a dialogue between heritage and innovation.

The play

Géronte is a bourgeois man blinded by astrology, whose every move is steered by the predictions of Pseudoramus, a charlatan astrologer who exploits his credulity.

The other man, more interested in Géronte's material wealth than in his own good fortune, convinces him that the stars have foreseen a perfect match between his daughter Lucile and Monsieur Merville, his barber—a marriage he hopes to cash in on. Already secretly in love with Cléonte, Lucile is beside herself at the prospect of this arranged union.

Fortunately, the young lovers can rely on Dorine, Lucile's shrewd maid, determined to thwart the marriage and foil the astrologer's schemes.
