The I need to live exhibition showcases the artist's entire body of work, from commissions to personal creations, from photographs to videos and contemporary installations. For the occasion, the Grand Palais Éphémère is divided into several spaces, each highlighting a particular period, series or collection of the artist's work. In this way, we can better appreciate each work presented, while at the same time gaining an overview of Juergen Teller's rich and diverse career.
Provocative,humorous, offbeat, unexpected: this photographer stands out from his peers with his singular universe. But a picture can hide a thousand words: behind a nude, an unusual portrait, a curious mise-en-scene, there are often deeper, more intimate and touching messages. Through his work, the artist expresses his solitude, his love for his family, his search for his identity, his place in the world, denouncing the abstruse rules of an over-formatted society...
Some series are almost autobiographical, depicting the photographer and his loved ones, his vision of the world and of life, his hopes and desires. The exhibition also gives pride of place to the celebrity portraits for which Juergen Teller is renowned. Agnès Varda, Iggy Pop, Lars Eidinger, Vivienne Westwood... Many have been immortalized on the artist's film.
The exhibition also takes us into the world of fashion and commercial photography. Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs: the artist imposes his vision, his surprising but striking style, which renews the image of these major brands.
Juergen Teller's creations are often surprising, sometimes poetic, sometimes disconcerting. From one image to the next, you never really know what to expect: surprise is part of the experience. Please note, however, that the exhibition is not suitable for all audiences, especially the very young.
