Behind the screen, the making of animated film: free exhibition at Le Lavoir numérique

Film buffs and the curious who like to understand how a work of art comes to life can rejoice: the Lavoir numérique in Gentilly (94) takes us behind the scenes of animated cinema, with a free exhibition open to all, presented from March 7 to August 17, 2025.

Derrière l'écran, la fabrique du film d'animation unveils the art of animated film, explains the different techniques used to set a story in motion, and reviews the history of this medium...

Through drawings and works created by École Méliès students, visitors learn more about animated film and the stages involved in creating a film. For the occasion, director and animator Oriane Gros has created a stop-motion animation film that takes us into the production of an animated film. This "mise en abîme" is divided into several chapters, and accompanies the entire exhibition, reinforcing the explanations presented at each stage.

Le Lavoir numérique looks back at the history of this medium, from the first moving images associated with the fairground arts, to 3D computer animation techniques.

The aim of this exhibition is to restore the prestige of animated film, too often confined to the image of "children's cinema". The works show the richness and diversity of this medium, its many applications, and the skills and knowledge required to produce these moving images and tell stories in a different, sometimes more creative and unexpected way...
