The Jacquemart-André Museum is set to delight art and painting enthusiasts starting this upcoming September. From September 11th to February 22nd, 2026, the Parisian museum will showcase works by the renowned French painter Georges de la Tour in a unique, thematically curated exhibition.
This key 17th-century artist, heir to Caravaggio, fell into oblivion, some of his works even being falsely attributed to other artists. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that he was rediscovered and brought back to the forefront of the artistic scene. After several centuries of anonymity, the Musée Jacquemart-André hasdecided to reintroduce us to this great artist, highlighting his career, his path and his life, all of which are still somewhat mysterious.
Influenced by Caravaggio, but also by the style of Dutch and French painters, Georges de la Tour quickly built up a fine reputation: his play of light and shadow captures the eye and creates striking pictures. The painter from Lorraine worked for some of the greatest names in the kingdom of France, including Cardinal Richelieu. He was also ordinary painter to King Louis XIII.
The Musée Jacquemart-André has assembled over 30 of the 40 paintings and graphic works officially attributed to de la Tour that we know today. The exhibition showcases a wide range of de la Tour's work and talent, from different periods of his life. The exhibition focuses particularly on the originality of this painter.
Influences from all over Europe, varied subject choices: the paintings on display stand out for their unique style and strong use of light. Georges de la Tour combines realism, naturalism and spirituality in his works: his attention to detail enables him to create paintings that are highly faithful to the times, while his technique of chiaroscuro lends tension and drama to his compositions.
And yet... Born in Lorraine, France, Georges de la Tour was a talented painter, but very different from the artists of his time. His style and choice of subject did not follow the fashion of the day. Despite this, he was highly appreciated, and regularly received commissions from collectors of the time.
Lovers of painting and art history should be delighted by this ground-breaking exhibition of exceptional works by this great French painter. Drawn from all over the world, these paintings have been brought together at the Musée Jacquemart-André to reveal the talent of this unjustly forgotten artist.
