Vietnamese artist Thảo Nguyên Phan unveils her work at the Palais de Tokyo! The museum presents Le soleil tombe sans un bruit, the first monographic exhibition in France devoted to the artist, from June 13 to September 7, 2025. Based in Hô Chi Minh City, where she lives and works, the artist presents a selection of recent and previously unseen works, combining videos, paintings and sculptures, exploring historical figures linked to relations between France and Vietnam.
A new body of work focuses on the figure of missionary Jacques Dournes (1922-1993), a theologian and ethnologist who documented the oral societies of Southeast Asia. Another series of watercolours is inspired by the Jesuit priest Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660), known for his contribution to the romanized phonetic transcription of Vietnamese. The exhibition also offers a dialogue with the work of artist Điềm Phùng Thị (1920-2002), initiated in 2023 in Milan and continued in Copenhagen, whose plastic language was based on a modular alphabet of geometric shapes.
Two in situ works by Trương Công Tùng are presented in counterpoint, extending the reflection begun within the Art Labor collective, founded with Thảo Nguyên Phan and curator Arlette Quỳnh-Anh. The artist develops a visual language combining painting, video, installation and archives, in an approach blending reality and fiction. Please note that a guided tour followed by a discussion with the artist is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, 2025. Ready to dive into the world of Thảo Nguyên Phan at the Palais de Tokyo?
