In the films of these photographers, dancers take flight like birds. Galerie de l'Instant unveils a selection of photographs focusing on dance, the body expressing and liberating itself through art. The L'envol exhibition, running from June 19 to September 14, 2025, brings together a number of well-known photographers who have immortalized these dreamlike dance movements.
Galerie de l'Instant offers a delicate journey through the world of dance. The images reveal true athletes, bodies both strong and supple, graceful and powerful. The work is by Matthew Brookes, a contemporary American portrait artist. His dancers pose, play with gravity without ever appearing to make an effort. His work includes the photograph of prima ballerina Hugo Marchand suspended in mid-air, an image that gives this exhibition its name.
The exhibition also features images by Robert Doisneau, the famous French photographer. The exhibition includes images by Sam Shaw, artist and friend of Marilyn Monroe: he immortalized the actress in her garden, sketching a few dance steps. He was joined by Gilles Tapie, who photographed his wife Sylvie Guillem, star of theParis Opera Ballet and London's Royal Ballet. Dancers from the Paris Opera are also featured in Maria Helena Buckley's photographs.
This exhibition is all about dance and bodies, but above all, it presents a collection of photographs that capture the wonder and love of these dancers, entirely devoted to their art.
Galerie de l'Instant promises us a lovely artistic stroll with this summer exhibition, to be visited free of charge in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris.
