Do you like medieval festivals? For 3 days, Moret-sur-Loing, a charming fortified town at the gateway to the Fontainebleau forest, takes us back in time. A former frontier between the Kingdom of France and the Duchy of Burgundy, the town is rediscovering the splendor of its past through the second edition of the Médiévales Loing et Orvanne, a participatory historical festival supported by dozens of local associations, schools and residents, with free access.
On Friday, the tone is set with an open-air screening of the cult film Le Nom de la Rose in Place Royale. Over the weekend, the streets are transformed into a living theater, with equestrian shows by Voltigo, medieval fencing skits, tales and fabliaux, and even a grand medieval Cluedo that plunges us into a mysterious investigation through the town. There are also demonstrations of calligraphy, blacksmithing and medieval cooking, as well as ancient dances and unusual nautical jousts on the Loing.
One of the highlights is the medieval banquet on Saturday evening, set to music in the garden of the Hôtel de Ville: everyone is invited to bring their own food, and feast together to the sounds of the Instrumentarium de Chartres. And for music lovers, the Festival de Musique Ancienne, at the Eglise Notre-Dame de la Nativité, offers a fine three-day program of concerts featuring organ, harp, chant and ensembles from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
The medieval market, set up in the heart of the town, allows us to stock up on historical products: hypocras, gingerbread, stone jewelry, wooden toys and children's costumes. In the streets, you'll come across a king in procession on his steed, jugglers, storytellers and even a horse-drawn carriage for a bucolic stroll. A warm and popular atmosphere where everyone plays the game, between costumes, animations and medieval decors.
You can also take advantage of guided tours of Moret's medieval history, or explore the Porte de Bourgogne, exceptionally open. On the food front, period specialities are on offer in the shops and tavern of the medieval camp: enough to satisfy the curious and the gourmet alike.
A great idea for an outing with family and friends, just an hour from Paris. Take a look at the full program and timetable. To find out more, visit the official Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne website.
