The Basilica of Saint-Denis, renowned for housing the necropolis of the Kings of France, invites visitors to uncover its secrets during Archaeology Days on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

It’s a cultural and offbeat gathering that promises some great discoveries: the European Archaeology Days return to the Paris region from June 12–14, 2026, offering another chance to literally uncover treasures that are often little known in Paris and Île-de-France. The idea is to bring archaeology to the general public. Young and old can set out to explore this scientific and historical discipline through activities and workshops that highlight the profession and its methods.

On the occasion of the Archaeology Days, the Basilica Saint-Denis plays along and seizes the moment to reveal its secrets to curious visitors and enthusiasts. The 2026 Archaeology Days program at the Basilica of Saint-Denis

We invite you to discover the basilica’s history through its various archaeological excavation campaigns. From the life of Saint Denis to the discovery of a mysterious royal sarcophagus, you’ll gain insight into the archaeologist’s craft, the different stages of an excavation site, and the archaeological tools. You’ll be introduced to the work of collecting, cataloging, and sorting to help reconstruct the object.

In a workshop, you will carry out a survey of the sarcophagus (1:1 scale reproduction) and analyze the items uncovered. Finally, you will undertake an investigative, analytical, and comparative exercise to date it and identify the person.
