It’s a cultural and offbeat gathering that promises some great discoveries: the European Archaeology Days return to the Paris region from June 12–14, 2026, offering another chance to literally uncover treasures that are often little known in Paris and Île-de-France. The idea is to bring archaeology to the general public. We invite you to discover the basilica’s history through its various archaeological excavation campaigns. From the life of Saint Denis to the discovery of a mysterious royal sarcophagus, you’ll gain insight into the archaeologist’s craft, the different stages of an excavation site, and the archaeological tools. You’ll be introduced to the work of collecting, cataloging, and sorting to help reconstruct the object.
In a workshop, you will carry out a survey of the sarcophagus (1:1 scale reproduction) and analyze the items uncovered. Finally, you will undertake an investigative, analytical, and comparative exercise to date it and identify the person.
