Behind the iconic gates of the National Football Center lies a surprising history that extends far beyond the sport. Long before it became the training ground for France’s national team, the Clairefontaine estate has endured centuries of change—from an English hunt pavilion to a war wounded refuge—while still preserving remnants of a 12th-century church.

Long before the days when Zidane or Mbappé laced up their boots on its fields, the grounds of Clairefontaine in the Yvelines region had a different story to tell than just football! Before becoming a castle, Montjoye first appeared in 1830 as a hunting lodge, built by the daughter of Mme Groscot de la Chapelle, overlooking the entire valley.

Extended by numerous successive owners, it has become a small castle, with its current façade designed in an English style by Lord Standish. But deep within the estate, there's also a section of the building that is even older!

Clairefontaine has a history that predates the 19th century! Before the current church standing in the town, there was once a former abbey church dating back to the 12th century. This was the church of Notre-Dame-de-Clairefontaine, of which only a vestige remains today. The segmental arch door, adorned with a small sculpture, can now be seen in the park of the National Football Center, located on what is now the French Football Federation's property. It will be accessible during guided tours starting March 2026.

Throughout its history, this estate has seen many lives. During the First World War, one of its many owners, the Standish family, played a significant role in caring for French and British wounded arriving in Rambouillet. They generously hosted the convalescents at their Montjoye estate from 1914 to 1918. It wasn't until December 1983 that the French Football Federation (FFF) acquired the property to establish its training center, which is now renowned worldwide.
