Barbizon's Parks and Gardens Festival 2026: free activities in Seine-et-Marne

The Barbizon Parks and Gardens Festival returns for its 5th edition on 18 and 19 April 2026 in Seine-et-Marne, centered on the theme World Gardens, with a lineup of free activities for the whole family.

The Barbizon Parks and Gardens Festival is set to celebrate its fifth anniversary on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, 2026, in the charming Seine-et-Marne village on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. This year’s theme, Gardens of the World, invites visitors to travel from garden to garden without leaving the 77—from the French formal garden to the Persian garden, via the Japanese garden. Entrance and the vast majority of activities are completely free.

Barbizon, renowned for its pre-impressionist art school and famed residents such as Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, is an ideal backdrop for this vegetation-staging exercise. About sixty exhibitors—nurserymen, landscape designers, horticulturists, artists and associations—will gather around the Town Hall at 13 Grande-Rue for two days of meetings and discoveries. The event, created in 2022 by Mayor Gérard Taponat, has drawn as many as 12,000 visitors in past editions. A free parking lot is available at Allée des Vaches, on the edge of the state forest, just a short walk away.

What can you see along the nine micro-gardens trail?

The setup centers on a nine-stop walk through micro-gardens that shows how each civilization has shaped its own relationship with cultivated nature. We move successively from one to the next;

  • French formal garden
  • English garden
  • Contemporary ornamental garden
  • Kitchen garden
  • Japanese garden
  • Persian garden
  • Mediterranean garden
  • Orchid garden
  • The Eternal Park

It's a wonderful way to see that behind every planting scheme, behind every plant choice, lies a philosophy that can be thousands of years old.

What free activities are available for children and families?

The program is especially family-friendly. Here is the schedule for the entire weekend, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.:

  • Pony rides in the town park, organized by the Chailly-en-Bière Pony Club. A privileged moment for close, direct contact with the animal.

  • Tree climbing offered by BSN Aventure: safely climb the crown of a 10-meter beech to take in the gardens from above, for ages 6 and up.

  • Carriage rides on a winding route linking the various World Gardens scattered around the village. A moment out of time.

  • Plant exchange fair organized by the Barbizon Friends Association and surrounding area: cuttings, seeds, and young plants are swapped among enthusiasts in a friendly, convivial atmosphere.

And Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. only, on the Tacot Esplanade:

  • Wooden hut-building contest: each team has 30 minutes to erect a hut capable of sheltering at least four people, using materials laid out on the ground. A lively warm-up that sparks collective creativity.

Who will be on hand in Barbizon for book signings?

Saturday, April 18, two book-signing events to note:

  • Alain Baraton, chief gardener at the Domaine de Versailles, will be at the Michel Bookstore in Parc de la Mairie at 2:00 PM, then at the Cyrano Bookstore at 4:00 PM.

  • Djamal Makhloufi, author of the Guide to the Orchids of the Fontainebleau Forest, will be signing copies with the Association Orchidée 77 at 11:00 AM and 3:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday. The association will also present its World Orchid Garden, offer cultivation tips, and discuss its efforts to protect wild orchids in Seine-et-Marne.

What workshops are offered?

On the agenda: several workshops, most of them free:

  • Orchid repotting with the Association Orchidée 77 — 3 euros per repot
  • Botanical painting on old fabrics with Marion Peeters, priced 5 to 20 euros depending on the fabric
  • Porcelain flower making for children with a complimentary Hommage RL
  • Discovering edible flowers by Pépinière La Mardelle — free
  • Free demonstration of Kokedamas (Japanese plant art) by Atelier Flore et Sens

All that remains is to recommend this 5th edition to families with kids seeking a nature escape within an hour of Paris, but also to gardening enthusiasts, botany buffs, and anyone simply wanting a bucolic Sunday in a village rich with history. Art lovers will also be delighted to take advantage of the chance to visit the Auberge Ganne or the Maison-atelier Jean-François Millet, two heritage sites just a stone’s throw away.
