Great tip: a kite festival with spectacular demonstrations at Base 217

There's a bit of a shortage of kites in the skies of Île-de-France, don't you think? Aside from Argenteuil, that is. This weekend, on May 9 and 10, 2026, you'll want to head to Essonne, to the famous Base 217, for the second edition of the Kite Festival, titled "Les Cœurs-Volants," organized by the Cœur d’Essonne Agglomeration. This event is a must-visit, offering a wide range of activities designed to wonder the whole family!

Over the course of two days, visitors will have the chance to witness spectacular displays of giant kite performances, with some reaching nearly 30 meters across, expertly flown by top professionals in the field. This year, you're even invited to bring your own kite and enjoy a dedicated space to make it soar, or purchase one right on-site!

The world's top kite sports teams will gather for an exciting aerial and acrobatic showcase set to music, while on land, you’ll have the chance to try your hand at windsurfing initiation sessions!

Thanks to a special exhibition, explore the history and technological advancements of these flying objects, and take part in hands-on workshops where kids can design and launch their own kites in a dedicated area.

Former military base now undergoing a vibrant transformation, Base 217 provides the perfect setting for this festival, thanks to its sprawling grounds, open skies, and wide aerial corridors. Tickets are just 5 euros for adults, 3 euros for children aged 5 to 12, and free for kids under 5 — a great chance to ignite their imaginations without breaking the bank. Don't wait too long to secure your tickets, as they tend to sell out quickly.

In 2025, we had the chance to visit and witness some stunning aerial displays, featuring a variety of breathtaking creations — from soaring whales and majestic dragons to dolphins being chased by a diver, and even a crocodile or an angel. The sky was a vibrant mosaic, impressing visitors of all ages. It’s impossible not to be captivated by this beauty, especially on a perfect day with bright sunshine and a lively breeze, just right for flying kites!

We recommend bringing your own picnic to enjoy lunch on the grass, as the food trucks tend to have long lines. Don't forget to bring sun protection, since shade is limited! Similarly, it's best to take the bus from Brétigny-sur-Orge station if you want to avoid a nearly hour-long walk, though you'll still need about 20 minutes to reach Base 217. Alternatively, come by bike or scooter for a quicker, more flexible trip.

When visiting with young children, it's best to come by car. Be sure to double-check your route beforehand, as other visitors have noted that GPS devices often suggest different paths!
