Synopsis

Dr. Nate Daniels(Idris Elba), returns to South Africa, where he once met his late wife, to spend a long-planned vacation with his two daughters at a nature reserve run by Martin Battles(Sharlto Copley), an old family friend and wildlife biologist. But this life-saving rest turns into a test of survival when a vengeance-hungry lion, the sole survivor of a bloodthirsty hunt by despicable poachers, begins devouring every human in its path, and hunts down the doctor and his family.

Our review

There's no need to look for subtlety or coherence in this Beast, only to enjoy the promise offered by the pitch: to see Idris Elba fight a huge, rabid lion. And even if the film's script is sometimes light on plot, the fight scenes are more than up to the task! It's a real, effective, regressive pleasure. The situation faced by the protagonist is delirious, and the film isn't afraid to get violent at times, which won't displease fans of grand spectacle. Baltasar Kormakur's direction is made all the more effective by the fact that his camera often follows Idris Elba from behind, with close-ups, so that you almost never see the beast coming. The surprise effect works every time!
