Owned by the Grande Chancellerie, the Hôtel de Salm is a beautiful building set on the Seine riverbanks near the Assemblée Nationaleand the Musée d’Orsay. For European Heritage Days, discover the Palais de la Grande Chancellerie as well as the Musée de la Légion d’Honneur.
If the Hôtel de Salm is still used by the Grand Chancelier for receptions and awarding the Croix de la Légion d’Honneur, the building is also open to the public thanks to the Musée de la Légion d’Honneur. Are presented official texts, original documents as well as sketches of the badge, photographs and video clips of the ceremony returning on the story of the Ordre du Mérite.
We discover the reasons of the creation of this Order officially created on December 3, 1963 by Général de Gaulle but initiated by Général Catroux in order to “reward merits” that wouldn’t have devoted the mandatory twenty years of service to France for the Legion d’Honneur or reward deserving foreigners.
Renovated in the early 2016, the museum got a makeover not long ago with new works, a new staging and a digital touch with interactive screens to give a more playful and teaching aspect to the tour. At the end of the visit, you’ll discover the cast of Général de Gaulle given in 2013 by sculptor Cardot to the museum after the exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the order. All you need to learn more about the very private universe of the Légion d’Honneur.
For European Heritage Days 2020, the Musée de la Légion d’Honneur, the Grande Chancellerie and the gardens are open to all for self-guided tours. Visit modalities will be announced soon.
