The “Pierres Précieuses, des minéraux aux bijoux” (Gemstones, from minerals to jewels) exhibition comes to shine bright in Paris Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle Galerie de l’Evolution, set in the Jardin des Plantes, with an immersive tour of 800 minerals, gems, art items, and jewels. Created and co-curated in partnership with French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels, the exhibition is running from September 16, 2020 to June 14, 2021.
On the occasion, the Grande Galerie de l’Evolution gathers over 500 pieces from the National Museum of Natural History collections. You travel 4.56 billion years back in time, when Earth was created. Walking through the exhibition is walking through the formation process of minerals. The tour shines a light on all the circumstances that led to the creation of emeralds, sapphires and other turquoises.
Besides raw minerals, the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle highlights jewels and art items from the Prehistory to nowadays, showing men’s long fascination for gemstones. For instance, you can find 300 jewel creations by house Van Cleef & Arpels. Created by professionals, these pieces show how gems and minerals can be worked and enhanced by humans.
Carved minerals and items answer one another all along the exhibition in the forty showcases set in the gallery. Projections and interactive screens enable us to understand more on the geologic mechanisms leading to the formation of minerals. Discover the properties giving gems their colors and their shine, major criteria for jewelers and stone cutters.
By the end of the tour, the exhibition gives us a look on the latest scientific breakthroughs enabling to recreate historic pieces such as Louis XV’s Golden Fleece. Do not miss the last piece of the exhibition, a high-jewelry item especially designed by Van Cleef & Arpels on the occasion and that required 6,400 hours of work.
Walking around these gemstones is walking around colors, lights, showcases returning on the evolution of gems into high jewelry items. We also love the short explanatory videos all along the tour without making it dull. A magical and impressive tour showing French artisans’ know-how and excellence. To visit and visit again and again and again!
