Less well known than the Musée d'Orsay or the Musée de l'Orangerie, the Musée Marmottan Monet is also home to many Impressionist treasures. Nestled in the 16th arrondissement, near the Ranelagh Gardens, this temple to art honors Claude Monet, and many of his fellow 19th-century painters... But that's not all! Come and discover the museum's many surprises.
Like the Musée Cognacq-Jay, the Musée Marmottan Monet was the brainchild of a collector with a passion for art. Paul Marmottan was an art historian born in 1856. His first taste was for the Empire style, which he used to redecorate and furnish his mansion on Avenue Raphaël. By enlarging the house, Paul was able to exhibit the collections of his father, who was fascinated by the Middle Ages and Renaissance painters .
On his death, without an heir, Paul bequeathed the entire estate to theAcadémie des Beaux-Arts, which transformed the mansion into a museum in 1934. Works by artists of the second half of the 19th century gradually found their place within these walls. Several bequests and donations enriched the collections. These included the bequest from Michel Monet, the youngest son of the famous painter. He donated many of his father's works to the museum. Today, the Musée Marmottan Monet boasts the largest collection of works and objects belonging to or created by Claude Monet.
The institution houses numerous paintings, sculptures, illuminations, stained glass and photographs, including works by Berthe Morisot, Jean Fouquet, Eugène Boudin, Paul Gauguin, Giovanni Benzoni, Édouard Manet, François Xavier Fabre, Gustave Caillebotte, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Marc Chagall...
Admiring all these treasures couldn't be easier. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and until 9 p.m. on Thursdays. Closed May 1, December 25 and January 1. Admission costs €14 for full admission and €9 for reduced admission. Admission is free for children under seven, disabled visitors and holders of disability cards. Good news: the museum states that reservations are not required, so you can enjoy a visit whenever you feel like it.
For your convenience, the museum offers audio guides, wheelchairs and elevators to access the different levels. Strollers are permitted on the tour routes.
Various exhibitions are held throughout the year. A store lets you take home a souvenir, in the form of a card, book, cushion, accessory, scarf, notebook, poster...
The museum is accessible by public transport, from metro line 9, La Muette stop, with buses 32 and 70, or by RER C, Boulainvilliers stop. Come and discover this magnificent museum and its exceptional collections!
