A new public holiday in France, another chance to enjoy the beautiful museums and monuments near you: this Thursday, May 14, 2026, is Ascension Day. But which art and culture venues stay open on this public holiday? Here’s the rundown.

May is definitely our favorite month: it’s the third public holiday this month! Lots of lucky people will spend less time at the office and more time in the museums. This Thursday, May 14, 2026, it’s the Ascension Thursday. In other words: it’s a holiday! Some even have an extra day off: if you take the bridge this Friday, you’ll enjoy a long weekend, perfect for having fun and winding down.

With all these extra days off, we've got plenty of time to get out and discover all the latest events. And when we see the program of museums in Paris and theIle-de-France region, we already know how we're going to spend our free time over the Ascension weekend!

Provided museums are, of course, open on this public holiday. The good news is that nearly all art and culture venues stay accessible to the public on May 14, 2026. The question, rather, is where you won’t be able to go. To that end, let’s review the list of cultural sites that close on this Ascension Day.

Museums and monuments closed this Thursday, May 14, 2026, Ascension Thursday:
