Did you know? The Pont Neuf is the oldest bridge in Paris. But not only…

When we think Paris no longer has secret, our beloved City of Lights has one (or more!) fun facts in store. Today, let us zoom in on the impressive Pont-Neuf. Welcome to our “Did you know?” column, especially created to be a social success.

The oldest bridge in Paris

In short, the Pont Neuf is not the first bridge in Paris, but the oldest existing. Erected between 1578 and 1607, listed as Historic Monument, the landmark has won many titles. This is the first stone bridge fully crossing the Seine and the only one back in the days to feature no habitations.

The first sidewalks in Paris

Who ever speaks of the oldest bridge of Paris thinks of the first sidewalk (right?). The bridge across the Samaritaine has the very honor of being the first one to feature the very first sidewalk in Paris. It is only in the early 17th century the sidewalk makes it to Paris, on the Pont-Neuf. Before its inauguration, Parisians by foot or horse walked the cobblestones, and alas, waste. It is in 1780 that the second sidewalk in Paris – rue de l’Odéon – is created. Then, in 1883, then Seine prefect Eugène Poubelle’s garbage cans are installed.

Wrapped by Christo before the Arc de Triomphe

Before the Arc de Triomphe this past Fall, the Pont-Neuf has been the first to have been wrapped by two artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, from September 22 to October 14, 1985. 40,000sqm of fabric, 300 professionals and thousands of Parisians amazed by the reflects of the golden fabric.

As well as…

Come on, we are nice, one last fun fact because this massive building is worth it. The bridge is adorned with a hundred cynical and mysterious mascarons looking at you… If you do not know what a mascaron is, it is perfect as we have an article about it.
