Why is the Pont-Neuf called that, even though it’s Paris’ oldest bridge?

In light of its name, how can the Pont-Neuf be Paris’s oldest bridge? We explain its history and the reason for this sobriquet.

One of Paris’s juiciest little paradoxes: the Pont-Neuf, with its name nodding to its fresh-faced newcomer status on the Seine, is today the oldest bridge still standing in Paris. Its construction begins under Henri III, who lays the first stone in 1578, then the project is completed and inaugurated under Henri IV in the early 17th century, in 1607. It was meant to relieve other bridges on the Île de la Cité, weakened by the floods and upheavals of the Seine.

So why this name? Because, at the time, it was truly... new. Not just new in the sense of "just built", but new in its design. Before it, Parisian bridges tended to resemble little streets suspended over the water, lined with houses, shops and narrow passages. The Pont-Neuf breaks with this habit: no dwellings on its deck, more air, more light, and a clear view of the Seine.

Another novelty that seems banal to us today: sidewalks. The Pont-Neuf is often hailed as one of the first Parisian bridges to include real pedestrian spaces. At a time when the roadway was gladly shared with horses, carts, mud and splashes, it was almost a urban luxury. The Pont-Neuf has thus kept this name because it was indeed innovative at the time of its construction.

He also innovates in his city role: he connects the two shores by leaning on the western tip of the Île de la Cité. In plain terms, it becomes a great seam of stone weaving together the Right Bank, the Left Bank, and the historic heart of Paris. And the funniest thing is that the name has stuck!

The other, older bridges have disappeared, been rebuilt, or replaced. He, the “new one,” has stood the test of time with a bold sturdiness. Hence the popular expression "se porter comme le Pont-Neuf", a compliment of robustness, perfect for a bridge that has seen kings, revolutions, carriages, tourists, love locks, and a flurry of selfies.

The Pont-Neuf is thus "new" as an invention, not as a recent birth date. Its name reveals less about its current age than the sense of surprise it generated in its own era, thanks to its modernity, its practicality and its revolutionary character.
