Discovering the French capital like you’ve never did before… This is what offers FlyView, the new virtual reality cultural attraction that sets near the Opéra Garnier and from March 31, 2018. An experience giving visitors the chance to fly above the city of Paris and its monuments thanks to a kind of giant Jetpack.
But, if you suffer vertigo, be rest assured… You’ll have your foot on the ground and fly no matter what above Paris, by getting on a simulator and by putting on a HTC VR helmet, making you feel like you’re flying in Paris sky but in real view (not 3D). To take part in this 13-minute attraction, there isn’t a crazy list of conditions: you have to be 8 years old at least and 1m20 tall.
The editorial board had the privilege to try this new experience before everyone else, and it's quite interesting! The scenography is very fun and good (we arrive in an "airport", we climb down to the boarding area, we enter a room to discover the instructions to be followed, and finally, we arrive in the jetpack room, where we finally settled), and the experience itself is satisfying. First because the pictures shown in VR are real takes and not synthetic images giving more realism to the trip. Then, the "take off" really happens atop the building housing FlyView, what the teams managed to do with drones, and finally, the synchronization between the simulator and the pictures is well calibrated for a total immersion.
All in all, 3 years have been necessary to create this incredible and unique experience, involving about a hundred persons on the project. A VR realization that needed a drone and 7 board cameras for a complete immersion of the visitor. In total, 50 custom-made simulators will be set covering 800-sqm (two floors) to make the dream of thousands of people come true: feeling like flying above the “world’s most beautiful city”. So, let’s fly around!
