Paris Carnival Tropical returns for its 18th edition on Sunday July 7, 2019. As usual, music, coclors and dance will take over the French capital to make you travel to the sun. This year, we return on the Champs-Elysées to party as one should for "Paris, la folie Carnaval".

Take your most beautiful costumes out again because Paris Carnaval Tropical is coming back for the 18th time. On Sunday July 7, over 2,000 carnivalists and about thirty bands from all over the world and Île de France will be attending. Guadeloupe, Martinique, Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna, the Carribean, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru will wake you up and fill you with enthusiasm.

Costumes more beautiful than the others and festive music will make you dance following tropical music rhythm. Not less than 200,000 spectators are expected to celebrate sunny days with joy and good mood during this must-see event.

Paris, la Folie Carnaval, that's the theme likely to fill this festive and extravagant day with dancers and their outfits. We're expecting colors, creativity and this dash of je ne sais quoi, a little bit crazy and that makes all the magic of the event.

Brought in by the Mairie de Paris and the DGOM - French directorate general of overseas countries and territories - supported by the Fédération du Carnaval Tropical, the Paris Carnaval Tropical is a true mix of world's cultures. The Fédération du Carnaval Tropical de Paris et d'Île de France will involve about twenty bands from Paris and Île de France but also from overseas.

"I wanted the Paris Carnaval Tropical to be made durable on the 'world's most beautiful avenue' to make this moment of culture sharing find a setting worthy of the islands overseas, showing everyone this opening to the world that makes the greatness of Paris. The theme picked this year, 'Paris, Capitale des Arts' is a fantastic tribute of the carnival to beauty, art creativity and the world influence of the capital" Anne Hidalgo said.

Metropolitan West Indians supported the event in its early stages but now it involves more and more varied countries and cultures: China, Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia, England and Holland now join the party. For two days, costumes, choreographies, floats and colors will represent overseas cultures and heritage.

Shows come one after another displaying costumes and what a feast for the eyes and ears! Paris Carnaval Tropical is a tropical breath in the French capital making you want to dance and eat spicy.

This prestigious event - already followed a few times in 2011 and 2019 - is back to give a particular importance to culture and art and carnaval fantasy of the participants.

It  gives to the Carnaval Tropical and especially to islands oversears "the world's most beautiful avenue" thanks to the "Paris Piéton" measure enabling to welcome without any car and in full safety as many spectators as possible who'll be able to enjoy the costumes, choreographies, music and floats decorated on the occasion and carrying the cultures and heritages of the countries invited.

Participating groups have been preparing the event for months. Paris Carnaval Tropical is a unique opportunity to discover hundreds of costumes which are as varied as the attending groups and mix colors, textiles and shapes to surprise little ones and grown-ups.

During the carnival you will also hear sometimes unknown rhythms which are the reflection of a cultural melting pot where musical creations overcome tradition and modernity. Traditional musics are carried out by Martinican Bele drums, Guadeloupean Ka drums, Reunion Rouleur drums and Subb drums strongly represented throughout the carnival. These musics also mingle with kon' lambi, steelpans, kazoo and cha-cha-cha tones. Bass drums and tom-tom drums set the pace to choreographies created for the event by some groups mixing heritage and creativity just like Paris Carnaval Tropical. Folk dances such as the biguine, the mazurka or the piké djouk crossed with Afro-Caribbean, Latino or Asian influences will be performed in the heart of Paris!

A stage will be set this Sunday, by the Rond-Point des Champs-Elysées to welcome celebrities and guests as well as the jury members who will decide between bands and musics.

For this 18th edition of the Carnaval Tropical, the stage will welcome the heads to the City of Paris, celebrities and jury members who are none other than:

  • Mrs Anne Hidalgo, Paris mayor
  • M. Emmanuel Grégoire, first deputy and Mrs Jeanne d'Hauteserre, Paris 8th arrondissement twn hall
  • Mrs George Paul Langevin, former Overseas Prime Minister, Deputy of the 15th ward of Paris
  • As part of the cooperations talks between London and Paris, M. Ian Comfort, head of the prestigious Notting Hill carnival, will be the guest of honor
At the end of the show, the jury will name the winners of the different awards, including those of the Fédération and the one of the City of Paris for "Best Band". Results will be announced at the end of the carnival and the award ceremony will have a special ceremony in September.

In other words do not miss how thousands hands worked thoroughly to present you this spectacular performance. It is not only an enchanting show but also a way to celebrate world's carnival cultures and to travel without even leaving Paris.
