For Nuit des Musées 2024, this Saturday May 18, the Château de Compiègne is offering a free nocturne starting at 8pm. As night falls, the royal palace will be lit up to let us admire the Emperor's and Empress's apartments by torchlight.

The Château de Compiègne is a stunning royal palace in the neo-classical style, steeped in history and filled with breathtaking treasures. If you want to experience its nocturnal charm, there’s only one way: attend the 20th edition of the Nuit des Musées, a free event happening this Saturday, May 18, 2024.

Located 80 kilometers from Paris along the Flanders road, the Palace of Compiègne was built under Charles V and has historically hosted the monarchs of the Kingdom of France, from Louis XV to Napoleon III. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous renovations, notably under Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Napoleon I. It also played a significant role during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 when it was occupied by Prussian forces. Following this, the castle was restored, with particular attention paid to its main apartments, including those of the Emperor, the Empress, the King of Rome, and a double apartment for a prince.

Today, the castle draws visitors from around the world eager to explore its museums, such as the National Museum of the Second Empire and the Carriage Museum, while strolling through its expansive gardens. Château de Compiègne has witnessed many pivotal moments in history. Originally a hunting lodge for the Merovingian kings, it evolved through the centuries into a grand residence. Under Napoleon, it was redesigned to host lavish receptions, emblematic of the power of the French Empire. It has also served as a distinguished guesthouse and has hosted numerous political and social events.

The castle’s collections reflect the rich tapestry of its history. The Museum of the Second Empire is dedicated to the reign of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. Visitors can view personal artifacts, artworks, and memorabilia from this transformative period in French history. Meanwhile, the Carriage Museum displays an impressive array of historic vehicles, from royal coaches to the first automobiles, tracing the evolution of transportation.

The architecture of Château de Compiègne masterfully combines medieval foundations with neo-classical additions. Elegant facades and opulent interiors offer a glimpse into the lavish and refined life of courtly society. The gardens, inspired by the designs of Le Nôtre, invite leisurely walks with varied perspectives and tranquil secluded areas, echoing the historical grandeur of the site.

Visiting the Château de Compiègne means stepping into France’s layered history, discovering unique collections, and experiencing the art of French living. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply seeking beauty, the castle promises an enriching experience you won't want to miss.
