The Château de Chantilly, 40km from Paris, is a real gem to discover. A magnificent estate left as it was in 1871, Chantilly comprises a large Renaissance-style Château, vast gardens in a variety of styles, 2 museums (the Condé and Horse museums) and a stable that is still in operation.
The Domaine de Chantilly was created byHenri d'Orléans, the Duc d'Aumale. Thanks to the precautions taken in his will, Chantilly remains today (a century later) a jewel case of preserved wealth. A great collector with no heirs, he bequeathed his estate to the Institut de France on condition that, on his death, the Musée Condé would be open to the public.
That's why today, the château has retained its period decor and furnishings, and is home to the only fully preserved princely apartments from the July monarchy in France. Recently restored, don't miss a visit to the château.
It also boasts the second-largest collection of ancient paintings after the Louvre, and a prestigious collection of books including the famous "Très Riches heures du Duc de Berry".
The Musée Condé is the legacy of the Duc d'Aumale: a great art lover, he decided to install his collection of paintings and objets d'art in the Château de Chantilly. Galleries of paintings were created to showcase his exceptional collections. He has assembled the second-largest collection of ancient paintings in France, after that of the Louvre Museum. There are over 830 paintings, 2,500 drawings, 2,500 prints, 1,700 old photographs and around 250 sculptures. Among other treasures to discover Nicolas Poussin's Le Massacre des Innocents, Philippe de Champaigne' s Le Portrait du Cardinal de Richelieu, Raphaël's La Madone de la maison d'Orléans, as well as works by Giotto, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Titian, Poussin, Van Dyck and Watteau.
The Grandes Ecuries du Chateau de Chantilly offers equestrian shows throughout the year.
They are also home to the famous Musée du Cheval, opened in 2014, a modern museum featuring almost 200 works of art based on the horse and its history. Fun and interactive, the Museum is suitable for all ages.
In the park and gardens, there's plenty to discover and enjoy. Imagine 115 hectares of French gardens, including Le Nôtre's parterre, as well as English and Anglo-Chinese gardens. Playgrounds, labyrinths and even kangaroos are to be discovered within the castle grounds. We recommend you take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage to discover the vastness of the estate, or take a pedal-boat tour for a change of scenery, with a sublime view of the château and the exceptional expanse of its ponds.
