Galeries Lafayette is the leader of these unmissable days. A vehicle for Parisian influence and taste throughout the world, the department store was opened on Boulevard Haussmann on January 15, 1894, and the Coupole was built in 1912. A veritable landmark of Art Nouveau Paris, Galeries Lafayette was quick to take advantage of contemporary artists, modernity and innovation, and since then has welcomed thousands of visitors every day.
To mark the European Heritage Days and the centenary of the 1925 International Decorative Arts Exhibition, Galeries Lafayette is celebrating its heritage and the Maîtrise applied arts workshops with an exclusive tour of the department store and its archives. Organized outside opening hours, this tour invites visitors to an intimate discovery of the place and its commitment to creation.
Founded in 1922 under the direction of Maurice Dufrêne, the Ateliers d'arts appliqués de la Maîtrise created a vast collection of modern furniture for the department store, from which emerged the first designs by Charlotte Perriand, Serge Mouille and the Adnet brothers. The event that symbolized the apogee of these art workshops was the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, at which the Galeries Lafayette Pavillon de la Maîtrise took pride of place.
