The 800-year-old château has seen a succession of the greatest kings, princes and dukes of France and Europe. The historic monument was a "family home"to the kings of France, in the same way as the Château de Rambouillet, the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the Château de Versailles.

Today, the Renaissance-style château and its grounds are popular with tourists, who come to admire the palace's 1,500 decorated and furnished rooms, as well as the various exhibitions on display. Events and celebrations throughout the year give visitors the chance to discover the palace in a whole new light.
