European Heritage Days 2026 in Paris: A concert beneath the glass roof of Gare de Lest

Each autumn, it’s a cultural milestone eagerly awaited by many French people. I’m talking about the Journées européennes du Patrimoine. To be lived this year on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026, these Journées du Patrimoine offer a chance to discover an original or innovative facet of the patrimoine and to step into places usually closed to the public.

Created in 1984 by the French Ministry of Culture, the European Heritage Days offer a wide range of free events, including guided tours and demonstrations of skills.

While some visits to museums and major institutions are a must, other events are more unusual. A case in point is Gare de l'Est, Paris. Alongside the Gare Montparnasse, Gare de Lyon, Gare du Nord, Gare d'Austerlitz and Gare Saint-Lazare, the Gare de l'Est is one of the six largest terminal stations in the SNCF network in Paris. Dating from 1849 and located in the capital's 10th arrondissement , Gare de l'Est was designed by architect François-Alexandre Duquesney and engineer Pierre Cabanel de Sermet.

Dawn Concert — Northern Railways Wind Orchestra
Music is part of a country’s cultural heritage. The Nord Railway’s Harmony Orchestra, part of SNCF. Deeply rooted in the 10th arrondissement, it only makes sense that we stage this concert on the forecourt of Gare de l’Est to brighten travelers’ wait, with more and more people stopping by each year to listen. Guided tour of the miniature rail networks beneath Gare de l'Est
For the joy of both young and old, we invite you to explore the miniature train networks totaling 800 meters of track, tucked beneath Paris’s Gare de l’Est, spread across three networks in three different scales (HO, O, and Im), and featuring the AFAC association’s activities.

SNCF Group: Destination 1996 — Mission: Impossible Takes Center Stage at Gare de l'Est
To mark the 30th anniversary of the very first Mission: Impossible film, SNCF Group’s Cinema & Filming division is hosting a standout event: an outdoor screening on the forecourt of Gare de l’Est. This public event will admit up to 180 guests per screening. On Friday the 18th in VOSTFR with exclusive remarks, and on Saturday, September 19th in VFSTFR.

The choice of this film highlights the enduring bond between railways and cinema from the very beginning. Featuring the TGV, this movie brought French rail expertise to the international stage, racking up 41 million admissions worldwide.

It's the perfect occasion to share a memorable cinema moment with the public, right at a SNCF heritage landmark. By projecting Mission: Impossible on the forecourt of a historic station, the Cinema & Filming division of the SNCF Group chooses to revive the working heritage of the TGV, elevating it from a purely utilitarian tool to a cultural icon.

The event also demonstrates how we help filmmakers reimagine our sites and equipment: the station is no longer just a pass-through space but a fictional setting that transcends time. It’s a concrete way to show that safeguarding heritage depends on its ability to inspire tomorrow’s stories and to remain a presence in the collective imagination.
