Guided tour of the exhibition "Matières à bâtir"
The Maison de banlieue et de l’architecture association is a “centre for interpreting the urban environment, suburban heritage, and architecture.” Our approach is to learn about the suburbs and to share that knowledge by cross-checking perspectives and linking memory with project work. A large portion of the association’s projects involves young audiences.
Each year, the Maison de banlieue et de l’architecture stages an exhibition connected to the history, heritage, and architecture of the Île-de-France suburbs. In 2026, the exhibition “Matieres à bâtir – Materials and Building Lives, from the Ground to Francilian Architectures” highlights the links between the suburbs, their architecture, and their building materials, and shows how local resources, building techniques, and ways of life have shaped urban landscapes and ways of living.
The Maison de banlieue et de l’architecture welcomes your classes for a free, guided one-hour visit, during which mediation activities will be offered.
What does the material of the Paris suburbs tell us?
Quarry stone from suburban housing estates, clay from early worker housing, postwar concrete sand: each resource reveals a chapter in the territory’s history and the connection between ground and structure.
An environmental history of exploited, transformed, or abandoned soils and landscapes;
a social history of the women and men who extracted, transformed, and built;
a history of techniques tied to territorial planning policies.
This historical lighting helps illuminate today’s environmental and social challenges. What roles can the different actors in the supply chains play today in relocalizing resources?

This exhibition presents an non-exhaustive, but telling, narrative of the link between geography and architecture from the 19th century to the present day.
