In Paris and throughout theÎle-de-France region, the Journées du Patrimoine are a not-to-be-missed event. During this exceptional weekend, our most beautiful treasures open their doors to us, sometimes in unprecedented ways, to let us enjoy a special program, often free of charge.
From now on, museums and monuments, as well as major institutions and private venues, will be joining in the fun, offering guided or self-guided tours, entertainment for young and old, and unusual activities that promise a whole new experience. As you can imagine, with the beautiful heritage of Paris and the surrounding region, the weekend promises to be ultra-vitamin at this 42nd edition, which awaits us on September 20 and 21, 2025.
Among the surprising places playing the Heritage Days game are hospitals. These are brimming with astonishing treasures, whether from a historical, artistic or scientific point of view. To prove it, we're taking you this time to the 14th arrondissement, to the Centre Hospitalier Sainte Anne, an establishment well known for its specialization in psychiatry, neuroscience and addictology. Here you'll find the MAHHSA, the art and history museum of Hôpital Sainte-Anne, whose collections feature works by patients from various hospitals.
Since its opening in 1867, the Hôpital Sainte-Anne has constantly evolved. Designed according to innovative principles for the care of psychiatric patients, today it combines historic buildings, modern constructions and green spaces designed to promote care and well-being within the site. In this multi-voice tour, you'll discover the architecture, history and botany of Sainte-Anne Hospital, with the garden manager and his team, as well as our mediator Charlotte Capdevielle.
Two tour times are available: 2pm to 3:30pm and 4pm to 5:30pm.
Embark on a journey through the astonishing history of a place of art and scientific knowledge. In the early 1880s, some ten years after the opening of the Sainte-Anne Asylum, a medical library was established, sharing the second floor of the Pavillon de l'Horloge with the on-call room and the residents' bedrooms. This proximity fostered a rich exchange of ideas, the foundation of the facility's dual scientific and cultural vocation.
"L'invention d'une écriture. Jeannot's Floor and the works of [...]".
After having approached Jeannot's Floor from an archaeological angle, MAHHSA is devoting a second exhibition to it, with the aim of inscribing it as a work of art. Guided by the exhibition's curators, Dominique Viéville and Anne-Marie Dubois, this tour brings Jeannot's Floor into resonance with major works of contemporary art, from Picasso to Dubuffet, Lucio Fontana, Niki de Saint Phalle, Ghada Amer and Gordon Matta-Clark, nearly 40 artists in all.
During the Occupation, 45,000 psychiatric patients died of starvation, cold or lack of care: a "gentle extermination". What was it like at Sainte-Anne? How did patients live there? What was the role of the caregivers?
An in-depth look at the hospital's history, with a close-up view of the daily lives of patients and the commitment of medical staff during the war.
