Among the most remarkable treasures of our heritage are places of worship, including cathedrals, churches, and chapels. Not far from the iconic Champs-Élysées and the prestigious Avenue Montaigne, there’s a masterpiece dedicated to commemorating a significant historical tragedy in the heart of the capital.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Consolation in Paris is an expiatory chapel erected in place of the Bazar de la Charité, a charity sale held in a wooden shed. On May 4, 1897, a fire ravaged the premises, claiming over a hundred victims, mostly women, including Sophie-Charlotte, Duchesse d'Alençon, sister of Empress "Sissi", and painter and ceramist Camille Moreau-Nélaton. One year after the tragedy, the foundation stone for the Bazar de la Charité memorial was laid. Inaugurated in 1901, the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Consolation now boasts a neo-Baroque style that can be admired from rue Jean-Goujon. Discover the program that awaits you at the next edition of the Journées du Patrimoine in Paris!
