The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur is undoubtedly one of Paris's most symbolic monuments, contributing to the charm of the picturesque Montmartre district. From the top of its mound, it can be admired from many vantage points in and around the capital, distinguished by its astonishing meringue-shaped silhouette and immaculate whiteness. And just in time for the Journées du Patrimoine, the Basilique de Sacré-Cœur will be revealing its secrets on the weekend of September 20 and 21, 2025.
Each year, this major cultural event offers a wide range of free visits and events in museums, monuments, castles, cultural centers, churches and even in places usually closed to the public, including major institutions, ministries, hospitals, military buildings and much more. So, what's in store for this year's Heritage Days at the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur? Here's everything you need to know about the 42nd edition!
One hundred and fifty years after it was first built, the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre has been given a new lease of life, with major restorations carried out on its spectacular organ, its legendary 18-tonne bell (the largest in France!) and its high altar. Built in 1898 by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, the grand organ is one of the largest in Paris and one of the most remarkable in France, and was classified as a historic monument in 1981. Forty years after its last restoration, the instrument is benefiting from major work requiring complete dismantling, which will ensure its long-term preservation and reliability.
