There are many interesting facts to know about the city of Saint-Denis. It is the most populous commune in Seine-Saint-Denis, and the third most populous in the Île-de-France region, after Paris and Boulogne-Billancourt. Its citizens are called Dionysiens.
Saint-Denis takes its name from the first bishop of Paris, a 3rd-century martyr whose tomb can be found in the Saint-Denis basilica. There's no shortage of such anecdotes! The city of Paris is full ofhistory, jewels and mysteries waiting to be discovered.
And that's what the Heritage Days are all about. This European cultural event is back for its 42nd edition on September 20 and 21, 2025. Architectures in Seine-Saint-Denis, season 1
--------------------------------------------
### Historic monuments in Seine-Saint-Denis
From the Middle Ages to the 20th century, the Seine-Saint-Denis region was home to a wide variety of buildings. Whether through their construction techniques, the materials used, the use of pioneering or innovative building models, or the renown of their architects, they are all part of our cultural heritage today.
The Grange aux Dîmes in Tremblay-en-France, the Church of the Old Carmel in Saint-Denis, the Château de Saint-Ouen and the Poudrerie in Sevran are just some of the Monuments Historiques on offer.
Watch all "Architectures en Seine-Saint-Denis" videos on the **YouTube**channel of the Département de la Seine-Saint-Denis.
Come and discover the fabulous history of the building in which the museum is housed, built 400 years ago! Accompanied by an interpreter, wander through the rooms to unearth unusual details and listen to amusing tales, in this place where a certain Louise de France once lived. The visit is followed by a workshop to create an imaginary museum.
Saint-Denis Carmelite Convent: from convent to museum
400 years ago, on September 27, 1625, eight sisters of the Reformed Carmelite Order settled in Saint-Denis. The town would become home to numerous convents, of which few traces remain today. The Carmelite convent is a unique example of the region's conventual architecture. It has lived several lives: from the nuns' residence, it became a military barracks after the French Revolution, while the chapel was briefly transformed into a temple of Reason and then a parish church. At the end of the 19th century, the nuns bought back the building, with the exception of the chapel, now used as a courthouse. It was gradually abandoned, before being acquired by the municipality. In 1981, the partly restored former convent became the Museum of Art and History, desacralized and open to all.
The architecture still inspires tranquility and spirituality, in keeping with its original purpose, and in contrast to the bustling urban environment. The sentences recall that a community of women, voluntarily cloistered, once lived here. The collection of objects and works displayed in the former cells tell this story. What do we know about these Carmelite nuns? About their daily lives, their commitment, their aspirations? Their relationship with the Church and male orders? The figure of the nun, imagined to be outside the world and outside time, is one that intrigues. She has been the subject of diverse, sometimes subversive, artistic reappropriations, from cinema to theater to burlesque performance.
Honouring this heritage allows us to question the myth and reality of a heritage that is very much with us today, and that echoes our contemporary concerns: sobriety, self-sacrifice, the relationship with otherness and the place of women in history and society.
There are two exhibitions to discover: Dans le silence du carmel: Dans le silence du carmel. Photographs by Hélène Mastrandréas and Dévoiler. A life in miniature (September 16, 2025 - February 22, 2026). To complete the tour of the former cells, the Carmelite nuns of Montmartre have agreed to talk about their daily lives, their faith and their relationship with social issues. This presentation is entitled Les voies.x du carmel.
The program retraces, questions and shifts the narrative of the 400 years of the Saint-Denis Carmelite convent. Guided tours, workshops, lectures and shows are on offer throughout the celebrations.
Housed in a former 17th-century Carmelite convent, the museum still bears traces of this past within its walls. Discover its eventful history through a tour enhanced by three temporary exhibitions celebrating the building's 400th anniversary.
Special guests on Sunday!

Come and (re)discover the works in the museum, nestled in a 17th-century convent with preserved architecture! From the medieval history of Saint-Denis to the poet Paul Eluard, via the siege and the Paris Commune of 1870-1871, this tour unveils rich and unsuspected collections.
Welcome to a "museum of words", under the auspices of Eluard, poet of love, commitment and play! Linguist Julien Barret offers a poetic stroll on the theme of the short form, from the Roman Empire to the punchlines of NTM. By comparing Dada and Surrealist proverbs with sentences written on the Carmelite walls, visitors are invited to play with words.
A surprise! The Sœurs de la Perpétuelle Indulgence du Couvent de Paris (Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence from the Paris Convent) will be gracing the Carmelite chapel with their presence on Sunday from 2pm to 6:30pm. Sisters of a different kind, they advocate tolerance and sexual health prevention. Having made a vow to the law and the duty of remembrance, they invite visitors to take part in activities, and offer their insights into the museum's collections.
The resonance choir from the Saint-Denis conservatory joins forces with three professional singers to celebrate the influence of the religious musical repertoire. On the program: plainchant and psalms from 17th-century France, and excerpts from Dialogues des carmélites, Francis Poulenc's opera premiered in 1957.

The Railway Cathedrals
Former SNCF repair workshops, now disused, the "cathedrals of the railways" form a unique heritage that bears witness to the industrial past of Paris's northern suburbs.
Protected as a historic monument in 2004, this complex is now at the heart of an ambitious project to transform this sector of Plaine Saint-Denis. Residential buildings, facilities, shops and green spaces will be created alongside the vast railway halls, which will be converted into a hip-hop museum - the future Aérosol. On this tour, you'll discover the history of this emblematic monument of Seine-Saint-Denis and examine the heritage issues involved in its transformation.
The tour is led by Antoine Furio, in charge of the cultural heritage inventory at the Département de la Seine-Saint-Denis, and Bertrand Monchecourt, heritage architect in charge of the conversion of the "cathedrals of the railways", with the participation of Eiffage Aménagement and Maquis-Art - L'Aérosol.
The initiative is supported by the Département de la Seine-Saint-Denis and Plaine-Commune, in partnership with Eiffage Aménagement and Aire Nouvelle - a subsidiary of Equans France, and with the backing of the SNCF.

Over its 8.4 km route, used daily by more than 62,000 passengers, it has profoundly transformed the urban landscape and improved service to these three towns.
Once again this year, we're offering you a journey combining tramway journeys and walks, accompanied by Brice-Manuel Catala, the engineer who followed the creation of this line from A to Z, and a veritable well of anecdotes and stories! You'll discover the architectural treasures of the towns you'll pass through: the salle des fêtes of the cité-jardin Blumenthal, the cité Paul-Éluard, the médiathèque Annie-Ernaux... A unique stroll through everyday heritage and remarkable architecture.
Please bring your Passe Navigo if you have one.
Please note that the tour includes a 3 km walk.
From Saint-Denis to L'Île-Saint-Denis, follow Hugo Trutt on a walking tour of Plaine Commune. Discover emblematic sites of cultural and artistic creation such as the Académie Fratellini, the Cité du Cinéma and the future Cité des arts et de la culture de L'Île-Saint-Denis. Along the way, you'll explore an area rich in history and varied architecture, from the industrial era to the 2024 Olympic Games. The tour will also highlight the virtuous practices that characterize this committed territory: reuse, sustainable renovation, building transformation and reversibility. The tour includes visits to sites exceptionally open to the public.
This tour is organized in partnership with CAUE93.
We don't know where to start! Which site are you looking forward to discovering? Long live JEP in the 93!
