One of the most inspiring stops in Paris and the Île-de-France region, the Musée vivant du Chemin de fer in Longueville, Seine-et-Marne (77), unveils its exceptional railway heritage at preferential rates (Admission €5 / Steam train €15). Founded in 1968 by the Association de jeunes pour l'entretien et la conservation des trains d'autrefois(AJECTA), this museum is the second largest in France in terms of historical railway equipment. Without AJECTA volunteers, the rotunda would have been demolished and the steam locomotives sent to the scrap heap. Now listed as a national monument, it houses a dozen steam locomotives, seven of which are protected, as well as carefully maintained rolling stock. For more than 50 years, these enthusiasts have been recovering, renovating and pampering each wagon and locomotive, tracing the evolution of the French train from 1866 onwards. Among the museum's treasures are France's oldest signal box, an Orient Express luggage car and a dining car from the legendary Train Bleu, where you can still dine on rare occasions.
