As is tradition for many years, each third weekend of September signals the return of the European Heritage Days. Created in 1984 in France, these days were extended to the whole of Europe starting in 1991, under the impulse of the Council of Europe. The objective is simple: to make accessible to the broadest possible audience a cultural heritage, often little known or reserved for insiders. Each year, in September, thousands of sites open their doors exceptionally: ministries, museums, industrial sites, religious monuments, but also embassies, true gateways between cultures. The 2026 edition spotlights the heritage of trades and craftsmanship, underscoring the importance of know-how in preserving our shared legacy.
In the 7th arrondissement of Paris, it is at the Embassy of Bulgaria, tucked inside the elegant Hôtel de Monstiers‑Mérinville, an 18th-century townhouse that we invite you to spend part of these Heritage Days. The embassy will exceptionally welcome us from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., free of charge, in a setting steeped in history. Enjoy your visit!
Discovering the Bulgarian Embassy
On the occasion of European Heritage Days, the public is invited to discover an extraordinary site normally closed to visits and to delve into the history of a prestigious 19th-century townhouse that now houses the Bulgarian Embassy.
This day will offer a rare opportunity to explore the reception rooms, the grand ceremonial staircase, and the remarkable architectural features of this 19th-century townhouse. Visitors will be able to appreciate the elegance of its interiors, a testament to the refinement of Parisian architectural taste of the era, while learning about its current role as the Bulgarian Embassy.
In keeping with the theme “Heritage of Photography,” a visual route will invite visitors to discover Bulgaria through photographs. Landscapes, monuments, traditions, daily life, and natural sites will illustrate the richness and diversity of Bulgarian heritage, while showing how photography today helps preserve and transmit the memory of a territory.
Designed as an invitation to travel, this day offers the chance to discover an exceptional Parisian heritage site while exploring, through imagery, Bulgaria's living heritage—its culture, photography, and traditions.
