During the Journées du Patrimoine 2025, many secret locations will be open to the public, including the Hôtel de Rothelin-Charolais, which opens its doors on September 20 and 21.

The European Heritage Days are back in Paris and the Île-de-France region, on the weekend of September 20 and 21, 2025! For this 42nd edition, many sites, often inaccessible under normal circumstances, will be opening their doors to the general public, to reveal their history and secrets. A great opportunity for heritage lovers to learn more about the monuments they often come across in the streets of the capital, without being able to enter them.

From museums to institutional venues, know-how workshops or even the backstage areas of major houses, survey a whole host of more or less original places over the course of two days, depending on what intrigues or excites you most! In the 7th arrondissement, theHôtel de Rothelin-Charolais is one of the finest examples of 18th-century Parisian townhouses.

Built in 1704 by the Marquis de Rothelin, of the d'Orléans family, who enlarged the grounds by acquiring several plots of land, but fell into debt and had to sell the property, the hôtel passed through several owners until the Princesse de Charolais, Louise-Anne de Bourbon-Condé, who decorated it in the Louis XV style. When she died in 1758, Louis-François de Bourbon, the future Prince de Conti, inherited the property and lived there until 1793.

The hotel was then purchased by the French state in 1825 and successively occupied by the Ministry of the Interior (1793-1860), the Austrian-Hungarian Embassy (1860-1869) and the headquarters of the Conseil d'État (1872-1876)! Many others have moved there in recent years, but since the presidency of Emmanuel Macron, it has been occupied by the government spokesman's office and several of the Prime Minister's departments.
