Vineyards on the doorstep of Paris? The idea may surprise, but Clamart was for a long time a land of vineyards. The Journées du Patrimoine 2026, taking place on September 19 and 20, 2026, offers a chance to delve back into this history at the Grange-musée Franquet. The vineyard long shaped the landscape of Clamart. At the time of the French Revolution, the village was even nicknamed “Clamart the Vineyard”. In the early 19th century, about 110 hectares were still dedicated to vines, producing around 1,650 hectoliters. By mid-century, this cultivation remained one of the commune’s agricultural lifelines.
As urban sprawl advances, plots vanish one by one. But this local story takes a new turn in the 1980s. The Confrérie du Clos de Clamart, founded in 1986, sets out to revive the wine-growing tradition. A municipal vineyard is planted on Rue Pierre-Franquet in 1989.
Facing this vineyard sits an old winegrowers' barn. Purchased by the city and restored to reflect a traditional agricultural building, the Grange Franquet opened in 1992 to house the winemaking of Clamart’s wines. In 1996 it became a barn-museum, where antique tools once used in viticulture are on display.
Its mission is twofold: to preserve the memory of rural Clamart and to pass on its wine heritage, while keeping this tradition very much alive. The locally harvested grapes are still used to produce two cuvées, Clos de Clamart and Clos Franquet, which are not commercially sold. The bottles are notably kept in the old vaulted Abraham cellars.
