I’m working on a 1956 cast-iron loom from East Germany, a behemoth weighing about 2.5 tons. It lets me weave what are called complex weave structures—textiles our grandparents wore, with subtle reliefs and small motifs. Numerous 18th- and 19th-century publications cover the topic, and I’ll display some for visitors, explaining the steps involved in the process with live demonstrations.

In Monet’s universe, from past to present: connections, materials and know-how
For Claude Monet’s centenary death anniversary, Vétheuil’s master artisans join forces with the Maison Claude Monet to offer a brand-new route that blends heritage, contemporary creation, and traditional know-how.
Like a dozen participating artisans, inspired by the painter’s world and his time in Vétheuil, Emilie Bertolin will showcase works rooted in Monet’s era.
Emilie Bertolin welcomes you into her workshop to share a craft that has remained unchanged since it began: engraving. You’ll see her manual cylinder press, a device influenced by the first presses built in 1860 by Henri Voirin. She will also demonstrate the tools she uses to carve several types of matrices—linoleum among them, a material introduced in 1863 in England, first used in engraving around 1900, the very period Monet lived in Vétheuil. Engraving today with these same tools is a way of preserving a contemporary craft that Monet himself would have recognized.
For the occasion, she will offer a series of prints centered on Claude & Camille Monet, two iconic figures from our village. Their presence left an enduring mark on the region. In their wake, artists from all walks of life and craftspeople have drawn inspiration from our territory’s distinctive character—a pull that remains strong today and has even drawn her to settle here.
She will also have the good fortune to host Ingrid Hiver, a talented ceramicist, who will present pottery created especially for the event: bowls and pitchers inspired by era-accurate tableware and echoed in Monet’s paintings. Ingrid’s work continually connects to an ancient practice; she stands among artisans who refuse to forget the know-how of potters past. Through her creations, she aims to share her love for traditional pottery.
Together, they will be delighted to welcome you, chat with you about their crafts, the gestures behind them, and an ancestral savoir-faire, all while reimagining a living heritage.

Mini-conference on the Seine: Monet at Vétheuil, 1878–1881
The Vétheuil Town Hall and Claire Vincent, a guide with a passion for Impressionism, invite you on a roughly 15-minute river crossing aboard the river ferry—a live-guided journey that traces the intimate link between Claude Monet and this Seine landscape.
This river voyage is a rare opportunity: right here, at this very spot, the painter traveled aboard his own boat-studio between 1878 and 1881. This freedom to move on the water allowed him to paint around a hundred Seine canvases, making him one of the artists who most famously depicted the river.
An exceptional chance to stand physically in the very scenery that inspired Monet, along the water, where it all played out.
The ferry is a mere five-minute walk from the Claude Monet House, 16 Avenue Claude Monet in Vétheuil. Visitors can park at the bottom of Rue de la Seine, in Vétheuil, and reach the embarkation point on foot in two minutes; signage will guide visitors from the bottom of Rue de la Seine to the quay. Booking only.

Claude Monet and Fashion in the Age of the Impressionists
Claude Monet is globally recognized for his landscapes, his pursuit of light, and his pivotal role in the history of Impressionism. His paintings also serve as a valuable window into fashion, the customs, and the elegance of the second half of the 19th century.
Through the works of Claude Monet and several Impressionist painters, this lecture invites you to explore how women's fashion evolved between 1860 and 1880. Crinolines, bustles, cashmere shawls, Japanese influences, accessories, daywear and evening dress reveal the tastes, practices, and transformations of a society in rapid flux.
Between art history and costume history, discover how Impressionist works today help illuminate the fashion and everyday life of the 19th century.
This lecture draws on the research of Lucile Daubercies, a student at the École du Louvre, specializing in fashion, clothing, and textile history, conducted as part of a Master’s internship at the Université Paris Nanterre. The project is overseen by the association Les Amis de Claude Monet à Vétheuil, led by its president, Claire Vincent.
This event is held in collaboration with the Foyer Rural de Vétheuil.
