For the Journées du Patrimoine 2025, the town of Rambouillet in the Yvelines is opening its doors to you for a weekend of discoveries and guided tours of its historic monuments, on September 20 and 21.

What if, for the Journées du Patrimoine 2025, we chose just one town to discover all the culture it has to offer? On September 20 and 21, the Yvelines département and all the other départements in the Ile-de-France region will be welcoming you for free, enriching and fun outings in the footsteps of history. Head for Rambouillet, just 45 kilometers from Paris by train, for a tour of historic monuments!

Known for its château and dense forest, which covers 200 km², the town is also home to a major museum dedicated to model railways, the Rambolitrain, as well as the Palais du Roi de Rome, the national sheepfold and the church of Saint-Lubin-et-Saint-Jean-Baptiste, listed as a historic monument. Numerous sovereigns, emperors and presidents have taken up residence here over the centuries, each leaving their mark on the town of Rambouillet.

    After purchasing the Rambouillet estate in 1783, Louis XVI wished to develop the rural town by enriching it with monuments. Among the architects, Jaques-Jean Thevenin designed a dozen projects, some of which can still be seen today, such as the former Baillage (now the Hôtel de Ville) and the Hôtel du Gouvernement (now the Palais du Roi de Rome). Join a guide as she takes you back in time to discover these 18th-century buildings.

    Rambouillet town hall is a former royal bailiwick - courthouse but also grain market, built at the request of Louis XVI. A true living heritage of the town of Rambouillet, come and freely admire its grand staircase and beautiful Council Chamber, decorated with portraits from the XVIIᵉ, XVIIIᵉ and XIXᵉ centuries, as well as a large hunting map commissioned by Louis XV.

    Come and enjoy an outdoor tour of the Town Hall, led by a guide who will retrace the history of the monument through the many events that have taken place there. This will be an opportunity to discover its architecture, witness to the many uses to which it has been put since its construction in 1785 by architect Jacques-Jean Thévenin.

    On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Lanterne team invites you to discover the media library's heritage collection.

    A bookbinder, equipped with some of his tools, accompanied by librarians, will explain his craft, as well as the history and treatment of this collection of antiquarian books. A selection of books will also be on display.

    On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, a librarian invites you to discover the media library's heritage collection through readings of texts from the old collection, accompanied by a harpist and dancers from the Lycée Bascan dance school. For the first time, readings will be taken directly from 18th-century books.



  • Lecture "Nature as model. The history of landscape through the prism of the Parisian Salons".

    The official Salon has always welcomed landscape painting, but as a minor artistic genre. For a long time, it was a painting of invention, until around 1830, when painters were inspired by nature and faithfully reproduced it on their canvases. Realism was born, and was to have a major influence on subsequent movements, from naturalism to post-impressionism.

  • Guided tour "An architect, monuments. Charles Trubert"

    Charles Trubert started out as an architect and surveyor in 1884, then became a building quantity surveyor before becoming the town's architect until the 1910s. His projects, some of which were completed, shaped the town's architecture and urban planning. From the Gendarmerie to the shelter for the Groussay washhouse, from the fire department arsenal to the Foch-Gambetta school: every day, you pass the witnesses to this era of great architectural creations.
