State Secretary for the Ecological Transition Brune Poirson confirms the government is working on a decree project aiming at increasing the cost of the fine for “leaving litter” from €68 to €135 in the next weeks. A fine that could be increased up to €375 in some cases and even €750 if the police passes a record to the court, the minister says.
The state secretary thinks that “if we want clean seas and oceans, it starts with clean sidewalks” before adding “we need each and everyone to understand that any piece of garbage left on the floor ends up in the ocean”. Statements made this Sunday June 7, 2020 as she was taking part in a waste collection on the Lège-Cap-Ferret beach, Gironde, the day before World Oceans Day.
If this fine aims at punishing all “littering leaving” act, whether related to coronavirus or not, the government explains that this process “echoes with Covid-19, with the sharp increase of the number of new waste left related to the health crisis”.
Moreover, the Minister for Ecology reminds the good manners to throw away facemasks, gloves, disinfecting wipes and other protections related to coronavirus:
