Facemasks have been mandatory in public transport (metro, bus, trains, chauffeur-driven vehicles, taxi) since May 11 – when France stared exiting containment. Some big stores have also decided to impose masks within the store to all clients.
But starting from July 20, 2020, facemasks may be mandatory in all closed public places or you could be fined 135 euros.
The goal being to prevent a resurgence of the Covid-19 epidemic, like in many countries across the world. Last weekend, Le Parisien daily released a column in which several doctors want to make “facemasks mandatory in all closed public places”.
But what are these closed public places facemasks could be mandatory in from August 1, 2020? So far, no exact definition exists to describe what a “closed public place” is. On July 14, on BFTMV, government spokesperson Gabriel Attal said “we will quickly define what public places we talk about, and how the obligation is implemented”.

But if we refer to the list unveiled by the French Administration website, “premises welcoming people” are “buildings inside which outside people are allowed” and “no matter the access being charged or free of charge, free, limited or by invitation”.
Are also listed premises for elderly people, premises for handicapped people, places of worship, banks, stores, shopping malls, gyms, without forgetting cultural venues such as museums, show and concert venues, movie theaters until you are seated. Then, you can remove your mask but think about putting it back on if you have to go.
Moreover, facemasks are also mandatory in all food stores starting from Monday, the Fédération du Secteur (FCD) and the Fédération du Commerce et de la Distribution (FCD) announced this Sunday July 19, 2020. Stores concerned are: Auchan, Aldi, Carrefour, Colruyt, Cora, Groupe Casino, Intermarché, Leclerc, Lidl, Netto, Supermarché Match and Système U.
As for gyms: you can remove your mask when working out. The Ministry of Sport considers working out is not compatible with facemask wearing. When you are done working out, do not forget to put in back on!
