Following heavy rainfall over the past few days, one département in the Paris region is still under a vigilance orange for flooding this Wednesday, February 28, 2024, while Paris and 5 others are still under a yellow alert. We take a look at the details of these forecasts in the Paris region.

The weather remains unstable over a large part of France this Wednesday, February 28, 2024 . Today, Météo France has placed 7 départements under " vigilance orange" and 53 others under "jaune".

The departments of Gironde, Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne and Pas-de-Calais, which have been placed on orange alert for flooding, will continue to be particularly closely monitored. For these departments, Météo France is forecasting"major flooding", particularly on the Canche (62), the downstream Dronne and the downstream Isle (33, 24).

What's the situation in Paris and the Ile-de-France region? This Wednesday, one department in the Paris region is still under orange vigilance for "flooding". This is Seine-et-Marne. Heavy rainfall over the past few days has aggravated the situation in this Île-de-France department, where"major flooding" is currently being reported on the Grand Morin downstream. Note that this alert bulletin is valid until midnight February 29, but this orange vigilance should be renewed for the day of Thursday February 29.

As Vigicrues reminds us, orange vigilance is a"risk of flooding generating major overflows likely to have a significant impact on community life and the safety of property and people. Major flooding is possible".

As a result of the heavy rainfall of recent days, the Grand Morin downstream in the Seine-et-Marne region is under close scrutiny. "The Grand Morin experienced a very rapid and significant rise in levels" following last Monday's rainfall episode, explains Vigicrues in its bulletin, indicating however that levels are now falling at the Pommeuse station and that the maximum was reached during the afternoon of February 27. "The recession that began upstream of the section at Meilleray and Pommeuse is weak and very slow," adds the specialized site, adding that"levels will continue to rise until mid-day Wednesday in the Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames sector downstream of the section". In the commune of Meilleray, a maximum level of 3.39 meters was reached on Monday February 26 at 11 p.m., approaching the June 2016 maximum, according to the specialist site.

On Wednesday February 28, at around 4:40 a.m., the level of the Grand Morin downstream was 2.72 meters. And according to the specialist site's estimates, the level should fall back below 2.50 meters this Wednesday at 4pm, at the Pommeuse station.

Furthermore, on February 28, 2024, Vigicrues once again placed Paris and 5 other departments in the Paris region(Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Yvelines and Val-d'Oise) on yellow alert for the risk of "flooding".

Recent heavy rains have caused water levels to rise on the Marne and its tributaries. "The rise in the Grand Morin and Marne rivers has caused a rise in water levels in the Condé to Charenton area, which is expected to peak around mid-day on February 29," explains Vigicrues. Rising water levels have also been observed on the Marne between La Ferté and Meaux. "This rise should continue for a few days. The first overflows occurred during the night of Tuesday to Wednesday on this stretch of the river" indicates the specialist site.

Lastly, levels on the Seine in Paris have also been rising since last Monday. "This rise will continue over the coming days, as a consequence of the rise in the Marne" warns Vigicrues. At 4:20 a.m. on February 28, the level of the Seine reached 3.34 meters at the Paris-Austerlitz station. According to forecasts, it could exceed 3.50 meters during the day on February 29.
